Valentine's Concert
NWSO's Valentine's Concert, second in the 2015-2016 season, features compositions by three local Northwest composers.
Flock in Flight, Tim Huling *
For Malala (world premiere), Sumi Tonooka *
Trombone Concerto, Samuel Jones *
featuring Ko-ichiro Yamamoto, trombone soloist
On the Town: Three Dance Episodes, Leonard Bernstein
* Northwest Composer
Tim Huling has logged countless hours working on music for countless projects -- major motion pictures, quirky indie films, television, video games, and advertising -- for which Tim has created orchestral, jazz, rock/pop, and electronica/hybrid scores.
During a career spanning more than 30 years that has taken her from bases in Philadelphia & Boston, to New York & Seattle, Sumi Tonooka has been developing a body of work that surprises and delights audiences – quietly piling up accolades from jazz writers and fellow musicians.
Samuel Jones first came into prominence as a conductor…He then achieved national recognition in another field as he founded a significant new music school and served for six years as its first dean (Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music). All the while he has continued to compose, quietly amassing what has become a vital and active catalogue of works.
"From the exuberant Trombone Concerto by Samuel Jones, to the jazzy 'For Malala,' by Sumi Tonooka, and then concluding with Bernstein's Broadway hit, 'Three Dance Episodes' from 'On the Town,' this year's Valentine's concert is one of the most enjoyable concerts in our history!"
- Anthony Spain, NWSO Conductor & Music Director

Shrek The Musical Jr.
Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical. It's a "big bright beautiful world" as everyone's favorite ogre Shrek leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue
a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.
Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek. One day Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he's handed a task - if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad but a fairytale wouldn't be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.
